Introduction

Chinese is the most popular mother tongue language spoken all over the world. If a student can speak competently in Chinese and English then he/she is able to communicate with a vast percentage of the world population.

There are two kinds of common pronunication systems for pepople to learn Chinese. One is 注音符號( Bo Po Mo Fo) which is mostly used in Taiwan and the other is Pinyin systen which is used in Mainland China. There is some controversy as to which method is the best to use, either hanyu pinyin or the Chinese pronunciation system 注音符號( Bo Po Mo Fo). We feel that the students pronunciation will not be interupted by the English when using the 注音符號( Bo Po Mo Fo) system. Besides, learing 注音符號( Bo Po Mo Fo) will help students' characters writing, because the strokes of 注音符號( Bo Po Mo Fo) are parts characters.

Chinese is a tonal language and when a similar sounding word is pronounced the tone in which the word is pronounced can alter its meaning completely. Written Chinese is very complex to learn and will require the student to study Chinese for many years.

Tones

There are 4 Tones in the Chinese language. There is a 5th tone but this is a short sound and is not classed as a tone.

Click on the example character to hear the pronunciation. To demonstrate the different tones a sign wave at 200Hz has been used and the pitch altered using the appropriate graph.
